Why Signal Butterfly Valves Matter

In high-rise building fire protection systems, signal butterfly valves are typically installed at two critical locations:

1.Before the water flow indicator on the floor’s horizontal main pipe.

2.Before the wet alarm valve on the main pipeline.

These placements serve two main purposes:

1. Facilitating System Maintenance

When the sprinkler system on a floor requires maintenance, simply close the signal butterfly valve and open the drain port to empty the water from the pipeline, ensuring that the maintenance work is carried out safely and efficiently.

2. Real-Time Alert Function

A sprinkler system must always be filled with water to function properly in case of a fire. If the signal butterfly valve is accidentally closed, it will immediately send a signal to the fire alarm system, notifying personnel that the sprinkler system is without water. This alert enables quick intervention, preventing a potential failure during a fire emergency.

Thus, the installation of signal butterfly valves is not only a matter of maintenance convenience but also a critical safety necessity in fire protection systems.

Working Principle of the Signal Butterfly Valve

The signal butterfly valve operates through a worm gear transmission mechanism, which drives the butterfly disc to rotate, enabling valve opening, closing, and flow control. Inside the worm gear transmission box, a micro switch is installed to detect the valve’s status. The micro switch design typically follows two common configurations:

Dual Micro Switch Design

Equipped with both "open" and "closed" micro switches.

When the valve is fully opened or closed, the corresponding switch is triggered, sending a signal to the control room to activate either the "valve open" or "valve closed" indicator light.

This design allows operators to easily monitor the valve’s status, making adjustments and maintenance more efficient.

Example: In industrial settings such as chemical plants, control systems use these indicators to track the operational status of each signal butterfly valve.

Single Micro Switch Design

Only includes a "closed" micro switch.

When the butterfly disc is fully closed (0° position), the micro switch triggers a closing signal.

As the disc rotates between 40° and 90°, another contact outputs an opening signal.

The cam on the micro switch can be adjusted to display different positions of the butterfly disc, providing a clear visual representation of the valve’s status.

During operation, the handwheel on the worm gear transmission mechanism is rotated to control the angle of the butterfly disc, thereby adjusting the valve’s opening, closing, and flow rate.

Turning the handwheel clockwise → Closes the valve, restricting or stopping the flow.

Turning the handwheel counterclockwise → Opens the valve, allowing fluid to pass through.

Operators can flexibly adjust the valve’s opening degree based on actual requirements, enabling precise flow control for different system demands.

Their compact design allows for easy integration into tight spaces, such as high-rise buildings and dense pipeline networks, offering significant advantages in engineering design.

2. Adaptability to Bidirectional Flow

Most signal butterfly valves are designed with bidirectional sealing, allowing media to flow in either direction without strict installation orientation requirements.

This feature simplifies installation, making it ideal for systems where flow direction may change, such as fire protection water supply lines.
